Modern Urns
Drawing on the timeless geometry of the pyramid, this piece represents a journey. The broad, stable base honors the earthly foundation of a life well-lived, while the sharp, singular apex points toward the infinite. The glowing light at the bottom of the urn, creates an illusion that the pyramid is levitating. A physical metaphor for the soul’s journey. A reminder that while our loved ones are anchored in our hearts, their spirit has risen into a state of peace and light.
Height: 8 in (20.32 cm / 203 mm)
The design is a physical manifestation of a beautiful paradox: a sunset that never ends. In nature, a sunset is fleeting, a few moments of breathtaking color before the dark. But for those we love, their impact doesn't disappear when the sun goes down. This piece is designed to hold that light, allowing it to glow through the rhythmic vertical fins like the sun peeking through a distant treeline or a quiet horizon.
The horizon is not a distant, unreachable line, but a physical meeting point contained within the glass. The architecture of the urn creates a dual perspective of time and light:
The Sunset: Where the frosted globe meets the top rim of the blue glass, it creates the gentle illusion of a sun setting over deep water.
The Sunrise: Looking within the translucent glass, the base of the sphere appears to emerge from the marble, mirroring the sun rising above the land.
The sphere (sun) is in the eternal stillness of the "Golden Hour". A symbol of a light that never truly fades, providing a constant presence within the home.
Ancient Urns
Select from our three foundational shapes. Together, we will customize the finish to create a one of a kind tribute as unique as the life it honors.
Derived from the Greek word for "pomegranate," the baluster form evolved from ancient vessels to Renaissance architecture. This classic silhouette, defined by a swelling body and tapered base, was popularized by masters like Michelangelo. Today, it remains a symbol of permanence and grace, often merging classical European structure with diverse artistic traditions to create timeless, dignified memorials.
The ovoid form, mimicking the natural shape of an egg, is one of the most ancient silhouettes in ceramic history. Rooted in Neolithic pottery and refined by Egyptian artisans, it symbolizes life and rebirth. Its balanced, organic proportions provide a timeless foundation for intricate patterns, merging ancient structural grace with modern artistry for an enduring memorial.
Characterized by its seamless cylindrical body and soft, rounded ends, traces its origins to ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt. Originally used for protective seal stones and elongated alabastrons, this silhouette represents a secure, infinite vessel for what is most precious. Today, this sleek, minimalist evolution of ancestral grain jars offers a contemporary canvas for storytelling, providing a sense of modern protection, eternal continuity, and balanced sculptural grace.
"The greatest gift you can give a loved one who has passed is to ensure their likeness continues to inspire those they left behind.”
Our Story :
A Presence Preserved
Modern Urns didn't begin in a boardroom; it began with a profound loss and a search for something that didn't exist.
My name is Olu Onile, and in 2023, my younger sister (Nike Onile) passed away after a brave battle with breast cancer. She was a celebrated interior designer and artist, a woman who lived with a distinct flair and an uncompromising eye for beauty. When the time came to choose an urn for her, I was struck by a painful realization: the industry was stagnant. The options were traditional, basic, and entirely disconnected from the vibrant, creative soul she was.
Leveraging my background in engineering and design, I decided to build her something myself. I needed an urn that reflected her personality, not just a vessel for her remains.
The urn I created made her proud, I’m sure of it. But it was the moment I finished her commemorative sculpture that everything changed. When my family and I saw her face again, the effect was indescribable. It was as if she had returned from a long journey. In that moment, the weight of grief shifted; a rush of warmth filled my heart, and for the first time since her passing, I felt a deep sigh of relief. I knew then that everything was going to be okay.
That feeling, the healing power of seeing a loved one’s likeness and preserving their essence is what I want to share with the world.
Modern Urns was founded to move beyond the "basic." We combine precision technology with a designer’s touch to create custom urns and busts that do more than hold ashes they hold a presence. We are here to help you heal, to help you remember, and to ensure that the people we love are never truly gone.
